Guitar Practice – Watch TV Challenge

Guitar Practice – Watch TV Challenge

guitar practice The guitar practice – watch TV challenge isn’t easy!

Perhaps especially difficult for avid TV viewers. It requires committment and extra ordinary focus. In fact, it has a built in recipe for failure.

But, we learn from that, don’t we?

Guitar Practice: Embracing the process.

Embrace the pocess of learning to play guitar.

In our early lives we did not consider a failure a negative. We did not consider it. Had we done so, we wouldn’t have accomplished necessary skills. We knew that the repetition of  fall down – get up would lead to success. As we aged we somehow forgot how to embrace the process of learning. The result is that when a task is difficult to master we tend to give up and move on to something else. But here at acoustic guitar odyssey we are getting our #guitar passion back. So, let’s keep it.

Will you take the guitar practice – watch tv challenge?

guitar practice OK. Here it is. But first, a disclaimer. [ Do not ignore your recently prepared guitar practice area. This dedicated space for focused practice is very important. See the September 2014 blog. ]

It is not so easy, but the rules are simple. When a rerun comes on that you have seen, PLAY GUITAR!

OR:

Pick up your guitar and play on commercial breaks. See, it is simple. But, once you accept, if you forget to play on a break or watch the rerun, that is a failure. But, as expressed earlier, so what. Just start it over again.

Suggestion: Have a practice piece or exercise in mind that is not too demanding . For instance,  an easy exercise like this one.

P.S. Your comments, as always,  are welcome. You can just say guitar practice – watch tv challenge.

Guitar Practice Exercises:  Review the guitar exercises from the July and September posts.

RHfingerpima Guitar Finger Exercise: Place your right hand on a flat surface, wrist raised, cupped hand, fingers touching the surface.  [ s will indicate the small finger. ] Raise and tap the fingers down in this sequence.

p, m, i, a, m, s. Repeat and repeat, etc.. How many times can you repeat the sequence without tripping up? Strive to improve. Next, switch to the other hand. Do the same sequence, p, m, i, a, m, s with the left hand. Eventually try both hands together in contrary motion. [ Starting with both thumbs to middle, etc..

Guitar Tip: Clean your fretboard.  The fretboard is too often neglected.  [ Caution: Use nothing sharp. ] [ It is useful to know if your fretboard is maple, rosewood, or ebony. The woods require different approaches. ] Here is a detailed video. I also recommend reading this informative article. Alternately, do your own search on cleaning the fretboard. Guitar Passion – Get It Back!

How to get your guitar passion back.

When I play guitar [ practice ], the place my guitar passionmind goes to is peaceful. Other guitarist have told me the same. All at once, it is a place that is intellectual, emotional, and tranquil. All encompassing, huh? So, why do we not go there more often. Why do we delay and procrastinate practice? What reason or reasons do you have? [ Don’t be shy, post a comment on this. ] I have some practice suggestions to make even though I do not have your input yet.

Guitar Passion Practice Tips.

1. Make the decision to practice, then do it. [ Keep in mind length of practice time: post May 2014. ] Practice builds confidence. Confidence makes you want to do it again. Decide to practice again. Do you see the cycle this develops?

2. Have your guitar out, and available to play. Tune it. Here are some sources for tuning. This free online guitar tuner sounds the pitches as you choose the string. Here is a free downloadable tuning app for guitar. I use a free strobe style tuner app. These take some getting used to but have a lot of flexibility and I use it for other instruments as well. Of course, stand alone electric tuners are proven aids also.

3. Prepare your practice area. If your time to play is limited, organize your ideas and materials in advance. Know what you wish to focus on.

4. Learn the notes on the neck. In the previous post from August 2014 there was exercises for memorizing the guitar neck. We all learn differently.

You might try this guitar fretboard learning site. I liked it. Go there and scroll down to fretboard identification. Have fun with it. Get your guitar passion back by reinforcing and gaining knowledge.

Guitar Exercise.

On strings 1, 2, 3, 4. Play an open e. Now find the same note on string 2, 3, and 4. Play it, say the note name aloud, then picture it written on a music staff and in tab. If you only do tab, leave out the staff.  After you have done this a few times and you will feel it memorized. Then, do the same with notes f and g.  See chart below for your convenience. Left click on the image to view enlarged.
